Actor Johnny Delgado dies of cancer

Award-winning actor and director Johnny Delgado, 61, died today after a long and recurring battle with lymphoma.

Users of the social networking site Twitter were the first to be informed about Delgado's demise. Delgado's friends from the industry, character-actor Ping Medina and noted television director Laurenti Dyogi broke the news to followers of their twitter accounts.

Tatang johnny delgado passed away at 1:20pm, lets pray for his eternal repose,” read Dyogi's twitter post. He directed Delgado in one of his last tv soaps, 'Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay.'

Ping, son of one of Delgado's contemporaries, veteran actor Pen Medina, posted: “I remember that one scene I had with Mr. Johnny Delgado... swerte ako naka-eksena ko siya.”

Twitter user bayanihan hailed the late actor saying: “Dear Johnny Delgado: my 80s and 90s childhood wouldn't have been awesome without you. Tipping my hat; many thanks sir.”

Award-winning actor

Delgado, Juan Marasigan Feleo in real life, was survived by his wife, acclaimed-actress and director Laurice Guillen and their daughters, opera singer Ana and Cinemalaya Best Actress Ina Feleo.

He had appeared in over 50 films – his career spanning four decades. He starred in films by renowned directors: Lino Brocka, Mike de Leon and Ishmael Bernal.

His first “Best Supporting Actor” award was for Mike de Leon's Kakabakaba? (1980)

He won Best Actor for the 2000 hit family-tearjerker, Tanging Yaman by Star Cinema.

Delgado's last TV appearance was on the ABS-CBN primetime series, “May Bukas Pa” as Tatay Ben, a Fagin-type character whom Santino encountered.

His last film project was the indie short film, “Labing-labing” (2009) where he played husband to real-life wife Guillen and was directed by daughter Ina.

Two weeks to live

One of the late actor's most memorable interviews was for GMA7's magazine-talk show, Startalk, early this year where he bared the more delicate updates of his cancer.

"When I went to [the hospital], the CT scan, nakita na buo na ang cancer na yan...sarado na ang buong system ko. Binigyan ako ng two weeks to live,” he disclosed on the February 22 interview.

Lymphoma is typically described as “cancer of the lymphnodes.” The late actor was also reported to have previously suffered from colon cancer.
