Filipino director Brillante Mendoza’s Kinatay (The Execution of P) won the Best Director and the Best Original Soundtrack awards in the 42nd Sitges International Film Festival in Spain.
Mendoza, who was in Paris for a meeting at the day of the ceremony, got the good news from his assistant producer Tony de los Reyes. He told ABS-CBNnews.com that he was surprised because Kinatay was up against great films such as Moon by Duncan Jones and Thirst by Korean director Park Chan-wook.
“We had a very intensive meeting so I could not go to Sitges although I was very excited to compete there,” he said.
The festival organizers said that Kinatay is "an uncomfortable, abrasive film camouflaged with a stifling ultra-realism where the camera captures, in first person, the story of a kidnapping that will make even the bravest's hair stand on end."
Sound engineer Teresa Barrozo also won for making Best Original Soundtrack.
Earlier this year, Mendoza won the Best Director award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. His latest fim, Lola, will be shown at the Cinemanila Film Festival on October 15, 2009 at the Market! Market! Cinemas in Taguig City.
