Viola Davis, who portrayed Aibileen Clark in The Help, and Jean Dujardin, who was George in The Weinstein Company's The Artist, won the Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role honors for Theatrical Motion Pictures during the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier today.
Dujardin's role was that of a silent-movie star whose career went downhill as “talkies” went into vogue during the later 1920s. Davis won for her role as a black maid who revealed truths about her white employers in 1960s Mississppi.
Christopher Plummer was awarded Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Beginners, where he played an elderly father who comes out of the closet. Octavia Spencer won Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her work in The Help, as Davis's fellow maid.
In television, Steve Buscemi won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Boardwalk Empire. Betty White won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her work on Hot in Cleveland.
“I remember you, sweetheart,” White said as she held her award, referring to her 2010 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
Other winners include the stunt crew of the HBO series Game of Thrones and the ensemble cast of ABC's Modern Family.
The 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on Sunday, 29th January at 8PM UTC-8. SAG awardees typically go on to win Academy Awards, the 84th annual ceremonies of which will be held on 26th February.
