Lady Gaga alter ego Jo Calderone, mom-to-be Beyonce Knowles, and a tribute to Amy Winehouse were part of the recently concluded and record-breaking MTV Video Music Awards.
The crowd went Gaga as the Best Female Video winner appeared at the stage in a dirty white T-shirt, black jacket and black slacks as Jo Calderone. Her stunt reportedly drew more than 12.4 million viewers, the most in the history of the cable network.
“GaGa is such a perfectionist and wanted Joe to seem as real as possible. Even when the cameras weren't rolling, she stayed in character throughout,” a source said.
Meanwhile, Beyonce's revelation of pregnancy to husband Jay-Z was described as the “newsiest” in the event. The entertainer rubbed her belly at the end of her performance, told the audience, “I want you to feel the love that's growing inside me.”
The Billboard commented, “Beyonce stole everyone's thunder by revealing she was pregnant.”
Bruno Mars, Tony Bennett, and Russell Brand also led a tribute for Winehouse who died in July. Bennett showed the behind-the-scenes video of his duet with Winehouse, with the recording and the video to be released on September 14.
Katy Perry grabbed the Video of the Year (Firework), Best Collaboration with Kanye West and Best Special Effects for the video ET.
Adele bagged Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Direction for her video Rolling in the Deep.
Other winners were: Britney Spears- Till the World Ends (Best Pop Video); Foo Fighters - Walk (Best Rock Video); Nicki Minaj - Super Bass (Best Hip-Hop Video); Justin Bieber - U Smile (Best Male Video); Beyonce - Run the World (Girls) (Best Choreography); Lady GaGa - Born this Way (Best Video with a Message); Tyler, The Creator - New Yonkers (Best New Artist); and Britney Spears (Lifetime Achievement Award).
