Senator Noynoy Aquino and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay emerged on top of the official tally by the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) and will be proclaimed tomorrow as President and Vice-President of the Philippines, respectively.
The announcement came after the NBOC—composed of members of the Senate and House of Representatives—finished the canvassing of 278 certificates of canvass, the last of which came from Lanao del Sur. The joint congressional session has also officially adjourned as the NBOC.
Aquino of the Liberal Party (LP) officially got 15,208,678. His nearest rival, former President Joseph Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), got 9,487,837.
Meanwhile, Binay of PMP got 14,645,574 while LP's Mar Roxas got 13,918,490 votes.
In a statement read on ANC, Binay thanked his fraternity mates in the Alpha Phi Omega, Senator Francis Escudero, allied local government officials in Makati, and his family and supporters. Noticeably, his running-mate Estrada was thanked last. He added that he has “full support” for the Aquino administration.
Aquino's spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, meanwhile, hinted that Binay might be appointed as secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, though he said that Aquino will still ponder that possibility.
He also said that Aquino considers the electoral protest filed by Roxas as “his own decision.” Roxas has contested in front of the NBOC the issue of “null votes,” which amount to at least 2.6 million votes.
Roxass said he maintains his protest in a statement posted on the Facebook account of ANC.
"I have instructed my lawyers to gather records and evidence, and to study and prepare towards the possibility of filing an electoral protest," Roxas stated.
He reaffirmed though the legitimacy of Aquino's victory. "Wala na pong duda sa kanyang tagumpay. (There are no doubts on his victory) From day one, the success of his campaign has been as important to me as the success of my own."
