Villar and Aquino statistically tied - SWS

The latest survey from the Social Weather Stations (SWS) puts Liberal Party (LP) bet Senator Noynoy Aquino and Nacionalista Party’s Senator Manny Villarstatistically tied” in first place in the run for the presidential seat.

Aquino came in with 36% of respondents saying they would choose him for president if they had to vote at the time the survey was being given, while 34% said they would vote for Villar.

"The gap between the two falls within the ±2.2% margin of error used in the Feb. 24-28 survey, which used face-to-face interviews of 2,100 registered voters nationwide," said BusinessWorld, which commissioned the survey.

The survey was conducted as a mock election – respondents were given ballots to fill out in the style of this year’s automated poll ballots and deposited in a container.

“If the elections were held today, whom would you most probably vote for as President, Vice-President, and Senators of the Philippines. Here is a list of candidates. Please shade the oval beside the name of the persons you would most likely vote for,” the ballots said.

4% of respondents were deemed “undecided” because they did not choose a candidate, chose more than one candidate, or did not shade the oval behind the name properly so that an optical scanning machine would not be able to read the ballot correctly.

According to the SWS however, “assignment of the improperly marked ballots to the voters’ apparent choices would raise the national lead of Aquino over Villar by only 0.1 percent."

The SWS results contradicted the findings of a Pulse Asia survey released last week which showed Aquino ahead of Villar with a lead of seven percentage points, with 36% for Aquino and 29% for Villar.

Coming in at third place on the SWS survey was former president Joseph Estrada who came in with 15%, two percentage points up from the last survey. He was followed by administration bet Gilbert Teodoro Jr., who also inched up two percentage points to land at 6%.
