Actor and Lakas-Kampi-CMD vice presidential bet Edu Manzano will not be backing out of the polls despite a reported lack of funds from the administration party for his campaign.
“It's not true that I'm planning to withdraw,” he said. “I already told my president, [Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro], that whatever happens we will not quit until we hear the last bell. I will continue my run and I [am running] to win."
He added that news of him dropping out of the race was due to a misunderstanding.
“In any election, candidates are never really contented with the support they get…it’s just natural to have misunderstandings sometimes,” he said. “The misunderstanding was internal [within Lakas-Kampi-CMD], I don’t know how it got out of hand. If there are kinks, these could be ironed out.”
Reports of Manzano backing out stemmed from his campaign manager Aurelio "Reli" German, who earlier decried the lack of funding and support for Manzano’s campaign.
“I feel bad that the full support promised by the [Lakas-Kampi-CMD] party is not being fulfilled,” German said. “The agreement we made early on was very clear, that the party will provide all the requirements [Manzano needed] to run a decent nationwide campaign.”
“We have not even reached the P50 million legal amount mandated by the law,” added German, who pointed out that there were no television ads promoting Manzano for vice president, and few radio and print ads. “Maybe they think Edu is running for mayor in a third class municipality.”
Teodoro’s spokesperson Mike Toledo has tried to allay German’s fears, saying in a separate interview that funding for Manzano’s campaign was well on the way.
“Just because it is the ruling party doesn't mean that funds will be easy. We are still waiting. There will be some delays, but when [the money] comes, it will be put to proper use," he said.
