The latest Pulse Asia survey shows that among the nine personalities running for president in this year’s elections, the Nacionalista Party’s Senator Manny Villar and the Liberal Party’s Senator Noynoy Aquino are the candidates most people trust.
The survey conducted on January 22 to 26 with 1,800 adult respondents showed that 70% of Filipinos had trust in Villar, while 64% trusted Aquino. In contrast 18% said they were undecided about Villar, and 23% about Aquino. Both candidates had 12% of people deeming them untrustworthy.
The other presidentiables were far behind in trust ratings, with former President Joseph Estrada getting 33%, former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro with 32%, Senator Richard Gordon with 26%, Jesus Is Lord founder Brother Eddie Villanueva with 15%, Senator Jamby Madrigal with 14%, financial consultant Vetallano Acosta with 5%, and both Olongapo councilor JC de los Reyes and environmentalist Nicanor Perlas coming in with 4%.
The survey also showed that 47% of respondents trusted the Commission on Elections (Comelec), which is heading the country’s first automated elections, and 43% trusted the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), the Comelec’s accredited poll watchdog.
Another poll conducted by the Issues and Advocacy Center (the Center) shows Villar and Aquino tied at first place with a 27% trust rating for both.
“Our top two contenders are currently tied, for the simple reason that if you look at the advertising factor, for the whole month of January, Villar practically consumed 460 minutes of airtime," said the Center’s director Ed Malay.
Malay explained that the strength of a presidentiable’s campaign affected how people trusted him or her.
“In the survey conducted from February 1 to 8, 2010, and using a sampling size of 1,800 respondents…and cutting across all demographic sectors, the results show that the decision-making process of Filipino voters can be enhanced and influenced by the outpouring of information supplied by the national candidates through the different types of media platforms such as newspapers in both broadsheets and tabloids, television and radio,” he said.
