A 'clarion call' for discernment and reflection

Local music artists Joey Ayala and Tapati Tarongoy of Bagong Lumad, and Cynthia Alexander have voiced their support for dark horse presidential candidate Nicanor Perlas.

Perlas was originally disqualified from the polls by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) due to doubts that he could launch a nationwide campaign.  This decision was reversed in a January 14 ruling following an appeal for reconsideration by Perlas and clamor from his supporters, including over 2,000 of them from around the world in an online petition, for his inclusion in the polls.

Ayala’s support for Perlas and his party, the Partido ng Marangal na Sambayanan (PANGMASA) is due in part to the candidate’s strongly environmentalist stance.

"Si Nick lamang ang nakakaintindi ng tunay na pakikipagugnay sa kalikasan at tunay na pagbabago (Nick is the only one who understands true partnership with Nature and genuine change),” said Ayala.  “Furthermore, Perlas is the only one who has an integral framework for advancing profound sustainable development.”

Ayala, Tarongoy and their group Bagong Lumad have been advocating the protection of the environment for over 30 years, expressing their message in 11 music albums. Ayala has also received various awards like the prestigious Fr. Neri Satur Award for Environmental Heroism, given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2009.

Ayala’s sister Cynthia Alexander is also one of the country’s most distinguished singer-songwriters. She has released four albums since 1997, the latest of which is 'Walk Down the Road' which debuted last year. Her current projects include HUMANFOLK, a musical collaboration with an international band of artists with an album coming out later this year.

“This is a significant endorsement,” said Perlas. “It will make people stop and think: Why is Joey Ayala, one of the most creative and profound singers in the Philippine musical scene today and a role model for many young people, supporting Perlas?”

“The endorsements of Joey Ayala, Tapati Tarongoy, and Cynthia Alexander show that some of the most thoughtful and talented Filipinos in the country see the importance of and urgent need for new politics in the country,” he added. “Their endorsement is a clarion call for careful discernment and reflection, beyond gimmicks, money, dubious popularity, in the May 2010 elections.”
