Filipino businessman Manny V. Pangilinan will be the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) starting July 1.
This was announced by outgoing Meralco CEO Manuel Lopez earlier today. “I relinquish my position as Chief Executive Officer effective July 1 this year. I will, however, remain Chairman of the Board,” Lopez said in a meeting with the shareholders of the country's largest power distributor held earlier today.
Meralco will be the new addition to the Pangilinan group, with principal ownership in businesses which include the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), Maynilad Water Services, TV5, Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., Medical Doctors, Inc., Metro Pacific Corp., and Smart Communications. Pangilinan is also known as the benefactor of the current Philippine national basketball team sponsored by Smart and the basketball varsity teams of Ateneo De Manila University and San Beda College.
Lopez has held his post in Meralco since 1986, after the Corazon Aquino administration returned the once-nationalized firm to the Lopez group. He will be relinquishing his post to Pangilinan, popularly known as MVP, who bought 41 percent of Meralco out of the Lopez group's shares November last year.
“It is time for me now to do my share and serve the Lopez family business,” added Lopez. The Lopez group is the principal owner of ABS-CBN, Bayantel, and SkyCable.
