‘Number-coding’ scheme still in effect on EDSA holiday-MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said that they  will not suspend the ‘number coding scheme’ on today even as Malacañang declared February 22 a nationwide school holiday, clarified MMDA official Aldwin Laroco to ABS-CBN Sunday.

The clarification made was in regards to the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction in Metro Manila. The scheme regulates the number of vehicles on Metro Manila’s main thoroughfares by temporarily banning certain plate numbers which end in the restricted number(s) of the day during rush hours.

February 25, Thursday, is the 24th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution, the 1986 peaceful revolution that toppled the dictator Ferdinand Marcos from power.

The celebration was moved from Thursday to Monday, February 22, when PGMA signed Proclamation No. 1841 in July of last year.

In accordance with RA No. 9492 all non-religious holidays are moved to the nearest Monday unless modified by law, order or proclamation.

Part of EDSA to be closed

Sections of the Edsa thoroughfare will be closed this afternoon in connection with People Power anniversary festivities the MMDA announced to motorists in a separate statement reports inquirer.net.

The Edsa northbound roadway from Ortigas Avenue to Boni Serrano Street will be cordoned off from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for government-organized events in celebration of the restoration of democracy in the country.

MMDA advised motorists to use alternative routes like the Caloocan-Malabon-Navotas-Valenzuela area, North Luzon Expressway and C-5 going to Quezon City. Signs willalso be put up in areas to serve as guides to travellers.
