Carlos Quirino: Pen, paper and bookmaking

Carlos Quirino, with his wife LieselIn celebration of his centenary, Vibal Foundation, Inc. pays homage to the life and works of great Filipino scholar Carlos Quirino (1910-1999) in an exhibit entitled: Pen, Paper and Bookmaking: The Life of Carlos Quirino at the Yuchengco Museum, Makati City on February 18, Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

A legendary writer, scholar, sportsman and bibliophile during his lifetime, Quirino has authored several groundbreaking historical and biographical writings, among which are the Great Malayan (1983), the award-winning biography of Jose Rizal; Lives of the Philippine Presidents; The Young Aguinaldo; Filipinos at War and his master work, Philippine Cartographyconsidered the most comprehensive bibliography of Philippine maps in history.

As an inveterate collector of books, Quirino has amassed a rich collection of books and manuscripts, which will be displayed in the exhibit along with over 130 memorabilia items from the Quirino family archives and personal collections, including his never-been-seen manuscripts, diaries, personal letters, memorabilia, and the rare first edition copies of his books, both published and unpublished.

The event, which will be graced by the Quirino clan, will also showcase the launch of the third edition of Philippine Cartography, published by Vibal Foundation.

First published in a limited edition in 1959 and published for a second time in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Philippine Cartography showcases the largest variety of maps from the finest collections in Philippine history. With its erudite texts and high-quality reproductions of rare maps and views, it is an unparalleled book of its kind.

The book includes an introduction from renowned map collector and scholar Dr. Leovino Ma. Garcia.

A highlight of the exhibition will be a specially commissioned documentary-film by Vibal Foundation featuring interviews and commentary from esteemed artists and scholars such as F. Sionil Jose, Alejandro Roces, Manuel Quezon III and Reni Roxas.
