Australia is expected to hire thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in 2010 upon the signing of a labor agreement next month, said Labor Secretary Marianito Roque.
"I’m going to Australia in early January for the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA)," said Roque. Under the agreement, good quality and high-paying jobs in South Australia will be open to Filipinos with the appropriate skill level.
"Those who would qualify for the jobs would get at least US$4,000 (P185,579.71) monthly salary and there would be no placement fee," he added.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) also reported that Australia could be hiring as much as 300,000 OFWs over the next three to five years.
Japan is also expected to take on at least 20,000 Filipino workers when Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama implements the agreement for the building of a US military establishment in Okinawa. The Filipino workers will be brought in as construction workers.
According to Roque however, the majority of OFWs next year will still be deployed to Middle Eastern nations, especially Saudi Arabia, where Filipino engineers, construction and hotel workers will be hired.
