E-mailIn November 15, 2010, botanist Leonard Co and his four-man team were killed by gunfire from members of the 19th Infrantry Battallion in the in the forests of the Manawan-Kananga Watershed in Leyte.
While the military said that the incident was an unfortunate result of an encounter with rebels in the area, survivor testimonies and evidence gathered by independent fact-finding missions have suggested that no such encounter had taken place. The Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Justice have conducted hearings since then, but neither have released their conclusive reports to date.
To raise awareness about the case, family, friends, and the Justice for Leonard Co movement set up a photo exhibit at the Palma Hall lobby of the University of the Philippines, Diliman.
The exhibit, which opened November 14, a day before Co's one-year death anniversary, features a collection of 56 photos to commemorate Leonard Co's 56 years of service to science, environmental conservation, and to the Filipino people.
