National artist for literature Edith Tiempo passed away on August 21 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. She was 92 years old.
The Inquirer reports that she was rushed to Silliman Medical Center on Sunday afternoon for myocardial infarction but was pronounced dead at 5:35 pm.
Tiempo was a teacher, holding positions in Wartburg College and the Western Michigan University in the United States, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist College in Hong Kong.
She received various honors for her English-language writings, including the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award the Cultural Center of the Philippines Literary Contest Grand Prize, and Philippine Free Press awards.
Together with her late husband Edilberto, Tiempo founded the Silliman National Writers' Workshop yearly held in Dumaguete City.
She was conferred the National Artist Award for Literature in 1999.
“We have lost one of our pillars,” said Silliman University President Dr. Ben Malayang III of Tiempo's passing.
Tiempo is survived by her son Maldon, daughter Rowena T. Torrevillas, son-in-law Lemuel and grandchildren.
