Although she has to file her Certificate of Candidacy (COC), there is a strong likelihood President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be running for a seat in congress next year, said her lawyer.
"Based on her body language, I think [running for the 2010 elections] is under consideration," said Atty. Romulo B. Macalintal on Friday.
"Because of the clamor, she said she is going to give it deeper consideration," he added, referring to a demonstration by Arroyo’s supporters at Malacanang Palace on Friday.
More than a hundred fishermen, farmers and business leaders from her home province of Pampanga came to show their support for the president, with leaders asking Arroyo over loudspeaker to represent them in congress next year.
“We prefer her to Mikey,” said Celso Kabiling, one of the attendees. The president’s son, Representative Mikey Arroyo is the second-district’s incumbent representative.
When asked on how such a large group could enter the Malacanang premises, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that they “coordinated” with the Palace security.
“They are supporters and do not pose a threat...Otherwise the PSG (Presidential Security Group) will not allow them," he said.
Remonde added that, “If [Arroyo] runs it’s to serve the people, and not to protect herself.”
