RP students win 18 medals in int'l olympiad

The Philippine team at this year’s Indonesia International Math and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary Schools won a total of 18 medals – one gold, five silver and six bronze for the Math category, and three silver and three bronze medals for Science. Of the ten countries that competed, the Philippines came in at fourth place, right after Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan.

"Kudos to the young champs, their parents and the DepEd schools and parents," said Education Secretary Jesli Lapus. “This is another feat which confirms marked improvements in the National Achievement Tests in Math and Science since 2007."

“Our efforts are paying off,” he added.

The country’s sole gold was won by Adrian Reginald Sy from St. Jude Catholic School in Manila.

The silver medals were garnered by Jason Joseph Fernandez from San Beda College-Alabang, Prince Michael Balanay from Colegio San Agustin-Biñan, Andrew Lawrence Sy from St. Jude Catholic School, and John Thomas Chuatak and Nathaniel Lawrence Sy, both from St. Stephen's High School.

The bronze medals came from Farrel Eldrian Wu from MGC New Life Christian Academy, Benedict Ryan Chua Tiu from St. Stephen's High School, Emman Joshua Busto from Juan Sumulong Elementary School, Jasper Amadeus Opulencia from North Central School in Batangas, Andrei Triz Patupat from Old Rosary College in Laguna, and Franz Patrick Villamor from Central Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro.

Most of the team members were trained by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Philippines (MTG), whose training program "institutionalizes excellence in Math education and training in an effort to upgrade the discipline to meet international standards."

MTG founder Dr. Simon Chua congratulated the team for "proving once more the winning spirit of Filipino Math and Science wizards."

“We are proud of them and we hope this will encourage them to work harder to further hone their math skills so they can win more medals in international competitions and bring more honors to the country,” he added.

The win comes after the recent victory of Filipino students at the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The next competition Filipino students will be taking part in will be the Philippine International Math Competition scheduled later this month in Iloilo City.
